Completely Beside Ourselves

Aside from the mini Anthem Blue Cross rant, and it wasn't really a rant but more of a sardonic aside, we've had a lazy three days here in southern California. The weather was seasonably hot -- smokin' hot, actually -- and since the AC has barely been on all summer, it was cranked up, I let the boys play video games nearly all day, Sophie slept for hours and hours and I read. And read. And read. I'm reading a weird and wonderful novel called We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves whose title I adore. I also flipped through a pile of New Yorkers, and watched a few episodes of Orange is the New Black which I found not so great at first (too much titillating yet slick lesbian sex that I imagined the crew of writers guffawing over) and then I was sucked in and now I'm in. I rejoiced with the rest of the world as Diana Nyad, the world's Goddess, swam in to the shores of Miami from Cuba and I celebrated the laborers -- those who've brought us the weekend, the eight-hour workday, etc. etc.

Reader, what did you do this long weekend?

  1. I swear to you- it's been a lifetime of a weekend. Life and death and everything inbetween. Okay. The only deaths were those of chickens but I loved them.
I need a break. The beach may be calling my name.

  2. Highlights include: Seeing "In a World," with HT and sitting under our back yard awning with Songs of the Gorilla Nation (a perfect follow up to Completely Beside Ourselves, BTW) during a torrential downpour. Also a sunset walk with my daughter on the beach.

We also, as a family, joined the world in praying for Syria.

  3. We sheltered in place. Matt cleaned out the garage. We celebrated his 41st birthday. Odd that those two things coincided. Watched some US Open, did laundry. Shopped with my mother-in-law. Cooked a bit.

I like the title of that book too. Off to look it up!

  4. I loved "We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves!" I finished that one, promptly ordered "Leaving Tinkertown" on my Kindle, devoured that (so amazing!), took several long walks in the 'hood with the dog and anyone else who would join me, paid Lola to detail the inside of my car (best money I ever spent), and greatly enjoyed some fantastic food Bubba made in the smoker along with some sparkling Rose. All in all, a tremendously satisfying weekend, especially knowing that the girls are back to school next week and I get the house to myself again. Ahhhhhh.

  5. We rode the Route of the Hiawatha. It's a rails to trails conversion in the Bitterroot mountains in Idaho. We read the expository text on each kiosk and wondered how people managed to build such structures in 1902 with hand tools. There are multiple tunnels and trestles. People worked so hard at such dangerous jobs, and then the railroad management just pissed it all away.

  6. I too was psyched to hear about Diana Nyad. Talk about failing and try, trying again!

  7. Michelle was talking about that book, it's on my list even though I tore up my list. I did not care for "Orange is the New Black," I gave it three shots. Should I give it a fourth? I am now starting Season 3 of "Weeds," though, and have all kinds of guilty pleasure going on with that.

  8. I love your blue hallway so much. We skipped the barbecues to watch The Great Gatsby and drank dirty martinis. I read more Didion and a little Harry Potter and we managed to eat at a mexican restaurant that wasn't terrible.

I loved Orange if for nothing else than its diversity of women.

  9. I watched 1 episode of Orange is the New Black (so I could relate to my 16 yr old) and 10 episodes of the first season of Damages (so I could relate to my husband). I watch about 50 hours of tv per YEAR (no cable, just internet) so I think I've maxed out. I walked, rode bikes with my 11 yr. old and did alot of baking. All our B&B guests were here for a wedding. Fun to have so many new people in our little town. I threw out about 20 lbs of paper. Someday it will all be electronic and not cover my counters. I made my husband a HUGE LIST of all the projects I want him to complete over the next few months. My 14 yr. old and I discussed what would be the best calendaring system for our family...then I made her take a shower. I resolved to not eat wheat in September. I made work lists and home lists and am preparing for an interview at the end of the month. Even though I have no kids at the Elementary School, I couldn't resist checking out the teacher lists and seeing who all our dear teacher friends have in their classes. Today I worried all day about my youngest girl starting 7th grade. It wasn't an easy day for her or me. The whole Syria issue makes me ill. I love our President but I don't want anymore killing. Thank you for asking.
