Morning Light

I'm doing the final filling out of the new health insurance application, and we're actually changing providers! We're paying a bit more but getting vastly different coverage, can also drop Sophie's measly plan, add her to ours for the first time in nearly a decade, have her prescription drugs covered at a reasonable rate and feel a modicum of ease that if any of us should have the barest hint of illness or disease, we won't go bankrupt paying for medical care.

I am so excited about cutting off Anthem Blue Cross and switching providers. I might have a bonfire and burn something in effigy!

Please stay tuned for the festivities planned. All suggestions welcome.

  1. What good news!
As to an appropriate celebration- I have no idea. Burn your Anthem Blue healthcare cards for sure. I'm contemplating a burning ceremony of my own. I am not sure what's going to go in it but I have a few ideas. I feel like letting some things go, seeing what that makes room for in my heart and in my life. It's still a tiny idea but it is brewing here somewhere.

  2. Congratulations! You're an answer to all the red-brains who don't want affordable care for everyone.

I suggest the family get together and write a poem to be recited over a fire in the BBQ and toasts--tequila for you & milkshakes for the kids.

I enjoyed yesterday's post about hacking education and sent the video link on to Denny. You've shown great courage in taking a different path with Ollie. And the sense to know that you don't get a different result by trying the same thing over and over again. You'll figure out a way to get him the learning tools and education he'll need to succeed in life.

  3. Forgot to say, I loved yesterday's header photo--you in Claus apron & Henry in elf attire.

  4. I love it! Might I suggest writing a letter to Anthem to inform them? I'm certain you could strike the perfect sardonic tone in keeping with the letters they've sent you over the years denying coverage for some drug or other and increasing your premiums. That might just be as cathartic as a bonfire, or at least the appetizer to one ;-).

  5. I'm curious as well about what company you've chosen...

  6. If you are willing, I too would benefit from knowing the provider and plan you chose. I got a letter from Anthem between trips telling me they are switching me to a plan automatically unless they hear back from me by a certain date. With my continued travel, I have limited time to figure this out. I found another Anthem plan that I would choose but haven't a clue of others I should consider. Any direction you can provide/feel comfortable providing would be a big help. Sweet Jo

    1. Sweet Jo, we're switching to a PPO Silver plan with HealthNet. I got the same letter from Anthem with a 28% increase in premium for our old shitty plan. I can't wait to be done with them.

    2. Thank you Elizabeth. It is so screwed up. I don't qualify for any PPO except Blue Shield and none of my drs take it and St Johns, UCLA and Cedars are not covered under it. That leaves me with an EPO or an HMO. The best option for me seems to be Anthem Gold EPO and it seems eerily similar to an HMO. I am not at all happy. I do believe I qualify for a subsidy though... Are you finding that your current drs accept Heathnet?

  7. Well, you simply have to burn a blue cross on your lawn while friends gather 'round and sing anthems.

    1. This is the best idea EVER. I am totally going to do that.

  8. I'm glad to hear this. I still don't know how ours is going to shake out, but I do believe that while this change might not be positive for every single case, it will be for so many. Enough to make it worth it. I hope.
