Despite the Heat, It'll be Alright

Dang. Let's get some mileage from the weather here in the shitty. It's after 5:00 in the afternoon and still 95 degrees outside. It feels like God is blowing some giant blowdryer at us with all the lemon leaves curled up, the dogs' tongues, the palm fronds lethargic yet valiant and the crows silent. At last. I do dislike a crow. We're digging our new little smoothie/bullet/what the hell do you call it machine, mixing up coffee and ice and milk for me, protein powder, berries and yogurt for The Brothers. Lovin Spoonful or Joe Cocker? I have a funky right eye that's crusted over in the morning and tender during the day. The eye doctor says it's allergies, not infection, and the dry air. Stripped and parched, even my eyes.

Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty.

Here's Joe:

  1. Wow! What a great find! I've never heard the great Joe Cocker's version. He made it his. But I still love the Lovin Spoonful version too. It's just a flat-out great song.
May your heat break soon, your eye become clear and sharp again. Your words still are.

  2. I am looking at your picture and remembering how often I used to buy milk when my son was livng at home. We easily went through 2 4-litre's (I think that is one gallon) of milk a week. Now I buy one every 2 - 3 weeks. I wonder if he drinks as much now that he has to pay for it? How much milk do you go through in a week?

There have been times where I get so sick of the heat and I yell at the sun to quit shining already!

    1. You are right. We go through a lot of milk, drunk primarily by Henry! Oliver is not a big milk drinker, and I have only 1/2 cup or so a day in my coffee!

  3. Whew, makes me thankful we get cooling temps in Sept. I hope your eyeball feels better soon :)

    1. Yes. September is the only month that I dislike Los Angeles and miss the east coast.

    2. Don't miss it too much. It's 95 over here too. No kidding. Hitting that temp again today.

  4. Gawd, how I love to see pictures of your kitchen, especially if your boys are in it! Despite their brotherly rivalry, they always look like they are having so much fun in the kitchen. I have one of those "Bullet" things too. We went crazy with it when we first got it, but I've learned that putting ice cream in it may be the opposite of what you're supposed to do. They sure have a lot of pictures of fruits and veggies on the manual...oh well.

Although the heat in LA can be deadly, it also seemed to make the Lantana smell even stronger and I loved that. Lantana is the smell of LA to me.
Hope the eye gets better, I have allergies too. They make me look like I've been crying for days with a puffy, watery bag under my eyes.. yuk.
PS: I saw Joe Cocker in San Francisco back in the day and he was FANTASTIC, twitching all over that stage and just creating his frenzied magic. Loved it!

  5. I got one of those nutri bullet things this summer as well after I bought a whole bunch of fresh blueberries. Makes good smoothies. I'm not very good at eating my fruit so drinking them is good for me. I feel very virtuous when I make a smoothie.

But how can you not love crows? They're amazing. Smart, funny, interesting, beautiful.

    1. I know crows are smart and interesting, but they just give me the creeps -- particularly the way they hop around. And their cawing makes me insane.

  6. Every time you (or anyone) mentions Joe Cocker, I pavlovianly say "oh, baby, hoggify!" and share this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcLnuEpQ1yg

    1. Thanks, TJ! You're right -- that's what I thought and then read otherwise, but the internet was wrong -- or at least the site I saw was!

    2. yeah when you said that I thought What???!! that can't be right, it's SO John Sebastian. But, as with others here, that's the first time I ever heard Joe Cocker's version!

  8. I never knew Joe Cocker did a version of that song. I'm at work now so I can't listen but I'll do so when I get home! It's a drag the heat has persisted there -- we're downright chilly and wet here.

  10. I've always loved your writing, but I sense even more freedom and luminosity after Hedgebrook. Is it just me? I love coming here to read - it feels as if I just walked into your house.
