This Guy

I know it's Mother's Day and all, but frankly, who cares? I spent much of the day weeping on and off, and don't ask why because it's all blurry, the why. These are strange times, and I'm going with the flow of strange. Today was also Oliver 's -- the Big O's -- Ollie's -- the wunderkid's-- nineteenth birthday. We celebrated yesterday. I made a traditional cheesecake with strawberries on top, and Oliver invited some friends over to social distance celebrate. Masks were worn. Oliver was born a few months before 9/11 and now this. Life is weird.

A few of Oliver's friends went to PRESCHOOL WITH HIM. I'd put their pictures up here, but they'd probably kill me. It makes me so happy that they've known one another all their lives.

Happy Birthday, Oliver. I love you so much, baby.

(Oliver is NOT this tall -- I am standing on a stair below him. BUT -- I am morphing into my Italian grandmother.)

Here are some posts about Oliver over the years:

  1. Happy belated birthday to Oliver. It seems like he was a kid just the other day and now he's a handsome young man.

These are strange times indeed. I'm sorry you had a bad day yesterday. Sending hugs and love.

  2. So much to weep about, and so much joy. Glad your boy had a beautiful celebration, despite the craziness of the world right now.

  3. I think it is finally seeping into my tiny brain that these are strange times indeed. Teenagers sitting around so far apart all wearing masks to celebrate a birthday is NOT NORMAL.
But your boy is handsome and you've made him a beautiful cheesecake and the day looked gorgeous and there was love.
And balloons- the most beautiful balloons!

  4. Happy Birthday to Oliver and the resilience of having a Pandemic appropriate Party is so indicative of how Kids Roll with Strange Times and still have Fullness of Life and bring Joy to their Days regardless of circumstance! Mother's Day is complex for our Family so we mostly ignore it, which is Okay. Virtual Hug... God I Hate not being able to give Real Hugs during Pandemic and just wrap my Arms Lovingly around those who Need it!

  6. It's been such a delight to see photos of him, and read stories about him over the years. I love him, too, and we've never even spent a single second together. You make this wonderful young man come alive with your posts. Happy Birthday, Oliver!

  7. I have grown to love this boy, now a man, through the years, his wit and resilience, his great big heart, his pure O-ness. Happy birthday Oliver. You are a rare and awesome soul.
