Also- somehow noble and thus, not worthy of a real salary. It wasn't until men entered the nursing field and the teaching field that salaries went up. And no stay-at-home mother (or father) is rewarded with any salary even though she does the work of many who, if paid, would cost the family thousands of dollars a month. At least. And caregivers- well- exactly the same. Who pays someone for taking care of his or own family? Not here in the US. Of COURSE it is a blessing to be able to do these things but it is also incredibly difficult and the financial strain put on families which allows a parent to stay home with a child, especially a special-needs child whose care does not end when school is begun or high school is graduated from, is impossible. And I'm not going to bash the Gates Foundation. It shouldn't be charity on any level which a country uses to provide for its citizens. As to HRC- I don't know enough to comment. <br />But what I do know, Elizabeth, is that you have educated me on this subject and continue to do so. And I thank you for that. Out of curiosity I looked into the cost structure back then (this would have been around 1987). It was a little over $100,000 a year per person, and of course the quality of care was not even remotely comparable to what I provide for Amelia at home. I'm perfectly aware, however, that saying this is merely spluttering. What's needed – part of what's needed – is serious strategizing. In my opinion, The Gates Foundation is only interested in band-aids that they can provide with the help of their enormous corporate/technology relationships. They are not interested in what it might actually take to solve real, actual problems and they are not interested in engaging with the actual people whom they purport to want to help so that they can help craft the solutions. I don't know why, but that is my experience. kariohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10150537989886423212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4863417462909147257.post-59327917891039588572016-02-23T10:53:56.725-08:002016-02-23T10:53:56.725-08:00This is exactly my situation. Instead I lie awake at night worried about becoming homeless. Sure, perhaps my family could manage with our tent and van, but I have four rescued animals. I know this is insane... The worries are insane. Those are two different things. It would be fabulous if I actually had more time to be Robert's parent, as opposed to his caregiver. Caregiving involves hands-on personal and medical care, as well as the reams of paperwork, emails, phone calls and accountability tasks required to coordinate the various programs that serve any person with disabilities. In addition, there are significant time burdens associated with accessing treatments, maintaining prescriptions, communicating with multiple physician offices, etc." My morning has already involved ordering diapers, fighting a supposed lapse authorization for said diapers, multiple phone calls on why no entity will pay for her sleep study, reordered meds. Oh and got her up, dressed and feed her, packed her bag and got her to school. It's only 10:30. Yes on all this.
