A deeper and more vibrant blue

Despite an evening spent enthralled, listening to the Bosnian-American writer Aleksander Hemon read from his new book, Book of My Lives, and from his essay The Aquarium, and then listening to his careful, accented voice spin stories of the harrowing war in Yugoslavia, and then eating taramasalata and warm pita bread and drinking a glass of wine with a good friend, despite all of this, I woke up this morning, the second day in a row, singing Lola Lo Lo Lo Lo Lola, the latest download that Oliver made on his iPod several days ago. Have you ever heard this song, Mom? he asked, and when I refrained from rolling my eyes and answered in the affirmative, we sang along, off and on throughout the day. I'm not sure why Ray Davies has taken up residence in my brain but the hallway is even bluer, a deeper blue and when I raise my voice, Looooooola, it echoes and disappears right there to the left, a kink that I like to imagine reaches my son as he walks the streets of New York with his father and brother.

  1. That's a beautiful rich blue. And you miss your boys, don't you? Heck, I miss them too, though I am enjoying imagining the possibility of seeing them on the streets of New York. I hope they take pictures. And don't you just get a kick out of when they think they've discovered something that has been around for just ages? Like Lola Lo Lo Lo Lola? And with my daughter, lately, Clarke shoes. She has a very fly pair of Clarke riding boots, the height of hipster, and all I can think is how very sensible and sober a Clarke shoe was when I was growing up. It was my father's preferred brand. But like you, I held my tongue.

  2. Ah, the Kinks. I love the way the light travels down that hallway and I love the idea of the song winging its way to Oliver in New York. What a gorgeous color against the honey of the floor! I will be singing that song all day now and when I close my eyes I will see that robin's egg blue in my mind's eye.

  4. That color is damn right celestial!
So tonight, when you have your glass of wine, go here and do a little dancing.

  5. That hallway is gorgeous, serene, and a little Twilight Zone (in a good way, I love Rod Serling's voice). Good to look at this picture tonight, 'cause it's a mixed up muddled up shook up world out there.

  6. Wow, the hallway looks great! "Have you ever heard this song" -- LOL! So funny. Has Oliver realized what it's about yet?

    1. I used Benjamin Moore's Natura Interior Paint -- semi-gloss -- but it was mixed from a few colors to match a turquoise pillow that I brought in.
