That's my Italian grandfather at the far left. He owned that bar and grill in Harlem, I believe. By the looks of the television at the top left, I imagine this photo was taken some time in the late forties but I can't be sure. I've always loved this picture. It seems like a world away but I can see my family in his smile.
That is one of my favorite pictures of all times. Thank-you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteAnd they're smiling. I bet it's not just because someone asked them to say cheese . . .
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the absolute most amazing pics I have ever seen! Knowing the era...how is it that a white Italian man runs a bar for black men? It is soooo cool! And the faces...so smiling. That is a piece of art and of history. And do I ever see your face in your grandad!
ReplyDeleteGREAT picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeletewow. Do you know the name of the bar? Is the building still there?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture...and what Claire said!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I wish I could walk into that bar, all 5'9' Scandinavian blonde woman that I am, sit down and have a glass of vino with them. I think I would be comfortable. I would love to ask your dad a million questions and listen to him talk. I would love to watch the other men tease him yet hang on every word he said. Thank you for this great picture!
ReplyDeleteI think is incredible. He looks so warm and inviting.
