Reading Before Bed

Despite their rambunctiousness, both boys still like it when I read to them before bed. If Sophie is having a good day, she enjoys it, too. Even Henry, almost twelve years old, will sit in the same room, reading his own book, with one ear cocked toward me. Tonight we finished one of my childhood favorites, No Flying in the House.

Before I started, though, I looked up and saw the three of them, so radiant.

  2. Triple ditto? Is there such a thing?

Also I am sleepy and at first I thought that in that first pic your boy had Little Mermaid pajama pants on, until I realized it was the quilt.

  5. The first picture looks almost as if Sophie were levitating- flying in the house, indeed!
I look at these pictures of your children and I see such glory. I see what you have created and tended and inspired and done.
I see your beauty in theirs.

  7. Wonderful tradition! I still read to my grownup boys every chance I get. Now it is usually political musings.
    Wonderful photo. Beautiful children.

  8. There is something magical about reading out loud to one's children.
One of the sweetest memories I have of a Christmas past is when both, already adults came for the holidays to visit and when I asked what would they like to do they said for you to read us again The Wind in the Willows, which I used to read to them doing different voices for each character when they were young. So there they were, all 6 feet and change of them laying on the floor, their chins in their hands listening to the story and I burst into tears because I witnessed the truth about Saint Exupery's saying "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." And so it was that gift.

As are the ones I know you give your children every day. Love... and make those grapes, they are not invisible but they are a gift.
