Just a little politics on a rainy day, please?

I found this quote regarding the upcoming California senatorial race, quite erudite (and, yes, that rhymes!):

The great tradition of political liberalism, as embodied by men like Roosevelt, the Kennedy brothers and current leaders like Russ Feingold and Chris Dodd, is based on the notion that, at times, only by government intervention can certain imperatives truly come to pass in our culture. They assert that leaving critical issues such as clean water, health care and financial industry reform to a self-regulating market place is wrong. That leaving issues like education, alternative energy and stem cell research to the party of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck would be disastrous. True liberals contend that conservatives not only have it wrong, but deliberately and disingenuously so, in order to actually deny opportunity to many other Americans.

And then I read this gem by Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina, who evidently is The Libertarian Tea Party's congressional spokesperson:

People are beginning to see that there's no way we can pay the interest on our debt and every week, we're borrowing money to pay the debt we have and are creating new programs that are costing more money,” he said. “Hopefully in 2012, we'll make headway to repeal some of the things we've done, because politics only works when we're realigned with our Savior.”
DeMint said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn't be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who's sleeping with her boyfriend — she shouldn't be in the classroom. “(When I said those things,) no one came to my defense,” he said. “But everyone would come to me and whisper that I shouldn't back down. They don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion.

  1. Oh my god. Well. Hurray for Alec Baldwin, at least.

  2. Oh great. More hate. Fewer civil rights. I always wonder how narrow minded religious people sync up their politics and their beliefs. Isn't LOVE what Jesus preached? Aren't we supposed to love one another? Aren't we created in His image? I don't get it.

    Yay for Alec B.

  3. I'd leave Chris Dodd out of the equation, but otherwise, yes, yes and yes.

The vision for America of the Jim Demints of the world leave my blood cold. I don't know how anyone of good sense and good conscience could ever subscribe to such heartless, dare I say, malevolent a philosophy. And yet, there a plenty and many utter the name 'Jesus' at every turn.

And yes, indeed that is our garden.
You are welcome any time and you know that. Sitting with a glass of wine and listening to the rain can do wonders for a personality adjustment after a hard day ;)

  6. I believe DeMint backed off some of his statements; however, did you hear that Nathalie Dupree (cookbook author/PBS cooking shows in the past) has thrown her hat in the political ring in S.C.? The symbol of her campaign is, what else, the pineapple!! My ultra-liberal friends in Charleston keep me up on the political scene there--sometimes hourly!! No wonder the south will never "rise" again!!

And, Charleston brings me to cotillion and my boys dressed in their best escorting little girls in their tres cher dresses, white gloves and anklets. And then we moved to the midwest!!

    Best,
    Bonnie

  8. Wow, Demint is a Libertarian? Libertarians don't typically care about things like sexual preference or marital status in the bedroom. I thought that party was founded on the concept of civil liberty! Scary.
