The Crossroads

The great Robert Johnson who claimed to have sold his soul to the Devil

My sidebar has been shifted around, mainly because I was accepted into the almighty BlogHer advertising network, and while I shirk at the commercial aspects of the whole thing and waffled back and forth on whether or not to display that rather large ad and adhere to their rules and regulations and agonized (a tiny bit) about using the blog for not just writing and musing but for making money -- well, the money won out. If anyone objects, I'm sorry. I really am. Nothing would please me more than to come to this site and not see a single promotion for a single product or service. But, here's the thing. I need extra money, mainly for childcare so that I can get more breaks from the 24/7 required as CEO of Sophie, Inc.

If this helps, hallelujah.

You won't see any ads for conservative political and religious causes. There won't be any ads to save your souls because Jesus is coming next week. I'll probably make enough to pay for Mary Poppins to visit for all of five minutes or so, but I've noticed that a lot of very beautiful blogs are part of the BlogHer network, and if you knew me back in seventh and eighth grade when I peaked out at my very ugliest and most awkward and incredibly un-cool -- well, I feel like I've made it now. But I remember my origins and won't scorn you if you adhere to your strict principles and just keep writing beautiful prose and poetry on your own blogs, unsullied by capitalism. You'll still be my friend, and I hope I can be yours even though my soul has been sold.

In the meantime, I wanted to highlight another new thing on my sidebar:

My dear friend Suzy gave it to me last week, and it's my new mantra.

  1. I'm not even sure I possess strict principles, but if I did they surely wouldn't include an aversion to someone making money from writing well.

  3. Honey- I am seriously considering doing the same thing and would love your advice. Why SHOULDN'T we get paid, at least something, for what we do here? I mean, besides in love.
And by the way- I love you to pieces. What we do for our families, whether it's scrubbing the toilets or trying to make money to take care of them is a holy thing. Amen.

  4. No objections here. If you can get 5 minutes of downtime out of it then more power to you.

Love the cup - I always liked "keep calm & carry on" but I just found it on a massive framed picture at Target so it might be time to move on to something less mainstream.

  6. Elizabeth, this is a GOOD thing. Good for you (an acknowledgment) and good for your family. I'd do the same in a second if Wordpress allowed it.

As for the new venture, good for you.I think it is awesome and would it help the cause if I visited you here like 1000 times a day?Cuz I would do it for you in a minute if it would help.

Looking forward to Zoey's coming out party at your place one of these days.Well, now that I have typed that, doesn't sound exactly right does it?But you know what I mean.

  9. Elizabeth, I have been on a blog sabbatical and just now read your blog for the first time in a few weeks. I agree, why not do what you can to ease your burden.

I have thought about it, but I am too erratic. I lose focus too much for advertising to work, but you, as CEO of Sophie...well it is wise thinking.

Do I need to click on the advertisements for you to earn something of it?

  10. GOOD FOR YOU! Congratulations. This is YOUR blog; do what you want to with it. You're a great writer; why not get paid for it? xoxoxo

  11. Getting paid for good writing? What a strange concept...

If filling every single space on the page will buy you a bit of peace and quiet, you don't need my blessings but you have them anyway. Actually come to think of it you should ask for a raise given your audience and the potential they have to get some good customers. Just saying.

  12. Congrats on your new network! Hon, no apology needed. Just let us know what helps you rack up cash. Do we need to click on anything in particular? Thrilled for you.

  13. I clicked the link because 1) you are pretty awesome
    2) looks like good stuff
    3) we need all the help we can get
Your new design is very 'ninja-mom' but if you had gone with white on black for the main posting I'd have to go because it gives me a headache ;)

  15. Do ads really bother people. They must be more visual than me. I come from your words and thoughts. I don't even notice the ads most of the time. And often they are for things I am interested in anyway, certainly more interested in than all those countless car ads on other web sites.

  16. I'd dig through the clearance rack at the largest bridal dress sale in NYC to be with you. :)

  19. It is not selling out to do what we can, what we must, to see that all under our care (including ourselves) stay as safe as we can keep them. Isn't knowing what we need one definition of wisdom?
