Friday afternoon at Sophie, Inc.

The CEO can't get it together and make the bed, put away the stuff and finish the godforsaken paperwork. I know ya'll think I'm some kind of wunderkind as I navigate the treacherous waters of Sophie, Inc. and I wanted to strip that veil from your eyes and show you what it's really like:

That box is filled with trash -- papers and miscellaneous. That stack of envelopes at bottom right is bills -- the top one being a long overdue property tax bill. Thank God it's blurry because I wouldn't want any of you to pick it up for me. :)

There's a phone on the bed and the datebook, too -- toys strewn around the room because Sophie was bored out of her mind.

Sophie, Inc. needs a restructuring.

  1. At least you have things in boxes. At least you have sheets on that bed. I think you're pretty darn amazing.

  2. I, too, am going to point out that your stacks are actually in, um, stacks whereas mine are in a big shopping bag that may or may not be eventually mistaken for recycling and just vanish. Which would be tragic.

[And that you believe beds require making is an adorable quirk]

  3. Your chaos is beautiful somehow. I hope that doesn't sound too goofy. : )

  4. I should go take a picture of my son's bedroom. He is 15. I just keep the door closed.

  5. I'm so glad you're normal, Elizabeth. I often walk into my best friend's house--who has no children, has one of those trouble-free marriages and disposable income--and it's always spotless, magazine-like. I am always so grateful to learn that there are other people who, you know, live and have lives and if you could see the floor of my office at the moment, or my kitchen, or...I keep telling myself: I'm not a Hoarder. YET.

  6. This is how we picture it (at least, I do, anyway) and WHY we think you're a wonder in itself! An ordinary life, lived extraordinarily.

  7. I am shamed by your tidy chaos!

  8. You have nice piles ... Works for me :)

Sophie, I am so sorry you were bored out of your mind. I've been feeling that way lately too.

  9. Sometimes I wish I could just come down there and sit with you & Sophie. Just drink tea and sit together, and then you could go out for a massage, and I would bring fresh eyes to help you reorganize "the stuff." I wish I could do that today.

  10. Except for clean sheets every ten days or so, bed-making is overrated (and doesn't happen in my house - ever).

As for to-do lists, I started several years ago swapping mine with a close girlfriend and we each took the liberty of crossing off the most useless tasks from the other's list (or, if not useless, the ones that could be delegated to the husband or put off indefinitely). It is a freeing exercise.

And, yes, Elizabeth, we all still think you are "all that." ;-)
