I'm trying, I really am. I'm trying to keep my spirits up, to be grateful, to do my meditation and breathing and exercise and reaching out and reaching in. I'm waking up on the early side to be reverent, to revel in the words of Jack Kornfield's new book A Lamp in the Darkness: Illuminating the Path Through Difficult Times. I'm delighting in my boys' escapades and grateful when Sophie has a good moment. The weather is outrageously beautiful. I saw this photo on Andrew Sullivan's blog yesterday, and my good friend D pointed out that it was taken about two blocks away from my house, yesterday morning at 10:15 am.

There's nothing like Los Angeles'  light and skies and clouds and skyline when it's clear.

So there's all of that.

This morning, I turned on the radio as I drove Sophie to school and heard the crusty voice of Bill Clinton being interviewed about his new book. I don't know about you, but I still love Bill Clinton. I don't care, and never did, about his sexual peccadilloes and when I hear his voice, I sit up and listen. Call me stupid, call me naive, tell me I'm a sucker, but I sit up and listen and always, always feel like here's a man who knows what's going on, who's brilliant and passionate and engaged in every sense of the word and he makes me feel better about that world.

Today, I feel better about that world -- at least as long as Obama is in charge and the whole pack of Republican candidates for president keep digging those graves of theirs.

There you go.

I hope you all have a good day. I'm going to try.

  1. Yesterday you spoke of Sophie's good "moment" and my wish for you and Sophie today is to have a string of them, like pearls. Like a clear day in LA - ahhhh!

Have you ever seen the movie, "LA Story" with Steve Martin? It's my all-time favorite movie, and if you haven't seen it, I recommend you see it once, twice, whenever you feel down.

Thank you for continuing to write.

  2. Not fair. Not a bit. Especially the added spritz of Lionel Richie on top of everything else. But, you know Elizabeth, if it's any comfort, that last part made me laugh out loud. It all wound around in such a beautifully funny way that the laugh was both taking pleasure in your wit and admiring your writerly ability to make that moment happen--we have all been there, in one chair or another, with the wrong song playing that is actually somehow so much the right song. So thank you. Sending love...

  4. You do have beautiful skies ....

I'm amazed at the contrast of the smart guys and the idiots lately. How can there be such a gaping chasm?

  6. I'd vote for Clinton all over again, and be damn happy about it. Always loved him. Through thick and thin.

  7. I like Clinton, too (from afar over here in Oz). Yay for good moments. Sigh for the oft overwhelming rest of the moments. xo
