The Baker is Back

via Etsy

This morning I was up at 6:30 baking a cake. I've got two cake orders today, orders I took at the last minute because My Other Job has drawn to a close, and I need the work. I have a Blue Velvet Cake with Purple Frosting and a Luau Theme to make today and a Milk Chocolate Chocolate Cake tomorrow. I will, of course, post photos later.

If you know of anyone who needs to hire a baker, please let me know. I can also advocate for children with special healthcare needs, review grants, create caregiver manuals and train caregivers, write grants and pull my legs over my head.

Reader, what are you up to this weekend?

  1. The whole contortion thing the guy in the photo is doing? Yeah, I can do that. Here, hold my beer.

  2. Nancy made me laugh! So did you.
Cooking. Baking. Putting jasmine in vases rather than actually cleaning anything. Making my chickens happy with fruit rinds. Remembering very lovely old women who were so sweet to me when I was a child. Stuff like that.

  3. Lighting a candle for an old high school friend who recently died and whose memorial service is this morning (the service was too far away for me to attend), listening to Judy Collins sing "Amazing Grace" over and over, holding my skeletal 15+ year old cat (kidney disease) and telling her I love her, nursing my aching neck and shoulders with a hot pack and generally thinking of death, so it's good to be reminded there are also cakes with purple frosting and contortionists and multi-tasking women who can do just about anything. Thanks.

  4. Uncharacteristically for me, I slept until 1:45 PM today, then took a call from a friend who is overwhelmed with moving, starting chemotherapy and taking care of his elderly mother whose health is failing...I will clean up my room, which has been a sick room for the past 14 days, see to the washing up in the kitchen, clean out the fridge, make sure my grocery list is ready for tomorrow and send up a silent prayer for my friend and his mother. If I am lucky, once I get cleaned up, I will get outside for a bit of fresh air. Thanks for asking and good luck with those cakes. They sound lovely.

  5. We are painting the boy's room screaming orange (his choice because in the interests of staying calm and pursuing my own vision I've stopped trying to control everything that everyone else does... tricky, but true.)Soon a soccer game and a ballet recital rehearsal and a birthday party and a sleepover, but for now, the peace of my office, the cool wood of my desk beneath my arms and thoughts of you, dear friend, and your beautiful cakes.

  9. I'm reading book proofs, going to a billion Little League games, attempting to make my yard look less terrible than it does, and applying for jobs on the West Coast. Oh, and trying not to think about the half of a birthday cake left in the fridge after both our birthdays this week.
