50

It's been a good fifty years. If I live to be one hundred, which I hope to do, I'm only halfway through!

Fosterling

'That heavy greenness fostered by water'

At school I loved one picture's heavy greenness --
Horizons rigged with windmills' arms and sails.
The millhouses' still outlines. Their in-placeness
Still more in place when mirrored in canals.
I can't remember never having known
The immanent hydraulics of a land
Of glar and glit and floods at dailigone.
My silting hope. My lowlands of the mind.

Heaviness of being. And poetry
Sluggish in the doldrums of what happens.
Me waiting until I was nearly fifty
To credit marvels. Like the tree-clock of tin cans
The tinkers made. So long for air to brighten,
Time to be dazzled and the heart to lighten.

Seamus Heaney, from Seeing Things

  1. Happy Birthday, Elizabeth. I hope you get to do what your very best heart desires today. Is that photo you? The Surfer just walked by and admired it. I remember those matching tops and pants we sewed ourselves that the mother (your mother?) is wearing. I loved them.

  2. Hey! Happy birthday! Wish you another great half century, and may your shadow never grow less.
Did you get the mermaid tattoo? (I had voted for the first picture, with color, but a classic indigo and a more abstract/stylized tribal ish design.) In any case I wish you get to do everything on your wish list.

  4. So your parents were in Jr. High when they had you? I, like Rebecca, remember those outfits we sewed ourselves.
And like Heaney, I didn't really begin to get the true wonder of the smallest things until I was older. I will be honest with you- my fifties have not been my favorite decade but I know that many women find them unbelievably rich and wonderful. And I will freely admit that there have been undreamed of rewards in the last nine years. I would wish all of the richness and rewards in the universe for you.
Happy birthday. Happy, happy birthday and at least fifty more.

  9. Happy Birthday Elizabeth!
May you be dazzled and may your heart be light.
    love,
    yo
p.s. love that her outfit matches the table cloth. Reminds me of a picture of Janis Joplin wearing a pantsuit made from a lace tablecloth.

  11. funny you should post a Seamus Heaney poem. just this morning i glanced at the right side of your blog and saw his quote:

So hope for a great sea-change
On the far side of revenge.
    Believe that a further shore
    Is reachable from here
    Believe in miracles
    And cures and healing wells

i had never noticed it before. i lifted it to put it on my blog post some day.

happy 50, e! i am not that far behind you.

  13. Have you heard from Helmet Girl the past week or so? She last posted last Wednesday, and nothing since which isn't like her. I asked in a comment if she was OK and said I love her blog, but she (or someone) deleted it. I'm kind of worried. She seems like a sweet lady.

  14. Happy birthday, dear Elizabeth. I'm so struck by that photo of you and your youthful, beautiful parents, you reaching so intently for the cake as if you knew such confections would be your future, and your baby self so much like baby pictures I have seen of Sophie. It really is a perfect photograph, especially viewed 50 year hence. Imagine how much more perfect it will be when you turn 100! Much, much love.

  15. Happy Birthday Elizabeth! 50 isn't bad. I've been there for almost a year now. If it's true that we are "only as young as we feel," somedays I'm 30 ish and somedays pushing 70. Guess it all averages out over time. Enjoy your day and I wish you many, many more lovely birthdays.
