Air Traffic Control

I'm not going to write a whole post about what it's like having three children in three different schools, one child being completely dependent whose bus must be met every single day the moment it arrives despite that child being eighteen years old. That would be a boring post. I also won't kvetch and complain about how busy I am, when I'm perfectly aware that the reason I'm so busy, so tied down with minutia and craziness is because of choices, choices that I am very fortunate to have. That would be boring as well. I'm also not going to write a whole post about waking up this morning with the blues and then reading an article about rural poverty, about working people who qualify for food stamps and are barely scraping by yet will have their food stamps cut or taken away completely because of greedy bastards in Congress (yes, I'll call the Republicans who wish to cut food stamps greedy bastards) and feeling completely, utterly fortunate and not a tiny bit abashed that I should groan and moan about my life. That would be a political post, and I don't feel like it. What I will include here, though, is a screen shot of an email that I received from a friend after that friend (Dorie) and another friend (Heidi) and I had exchanged about three million texts trying to figure out the carpool situation for tomorrow, Friday, when our freshman need to not only go to school and then come home, but go back to school for a dance and then come home. Dorie, Heidi and I have three children each, so nine between us and if you turn up your nose at the breeding we've done, well, read no further. We are kick-ass, a well-oiled middle-aged female machine:

Reader, are you a breeder and if so, how well do you work as an air traffic controller?

  1. Thank god those days of traffic control are behind me but I remember them well.
I do not wish to discuss those Greedy Bastards because I am feeling peaceful. Which makes me a Selfish Bastard.
    Sigh.
    Love you, dear.

  2. Breeder of six. Mimi to one. Although three are grown I still am needed, perhaps in a more difficult role than when they were smaller and it was intense physical care taking. Now I am helping them/listening to them find their way through huge life decisions and huge and sometimes horribly sad life events.

The younger 3 are in 3 different schools and Zoey is in a school exclusively for children with a wide range of disabilities, that is a 30 minute drive there and 30 minutes back. The school is fabulous so the drive 4 times a day is well worth it. The bus would require her to be up far to early and back far later than when school ends. Too tiring for her already tired little body.

Add to it a husband who is not home till 8;30-9 pm and no help to speak of and I would say, one of my strengths, thank the Lord, is my ability to be a master air traffic controller. My type 'A' personality has served me well in this chaotic and yes heavy and difficult life on somedays but equally beautiful on others.

  6. I think I could deal better with having just the two if I did not have to work nights. But yes, two kids in two different schools and I am taking courses while trying to work. It is exhausting.

  7. I have four- as you know- and Dakota is the oldest at 19. I was just musing today with Lola that I will be in my fifties when I start bringing Ever, the youngest, to high school. I was in my 30's when taking Dakota to high school, one of the youngest moms. WEIRD.

  9. I am the BEST at air traffic control, and I also am the best at planning outings of any kinds, with multiple people. Too bad I can't get paid for what I do!

  12. It does require an amazing set of skills. One must be detail-oriented, patient, flexible, creative, and willing to compromise. But it is such a lovely thing when you can find others who are in the same boat and you can all shoulder the responsibility.

Too bad the asshats in Congress can't do the same thing and find a way to help those who are struggling most.
