Thinking of Jeff Golub and Light

In the saddest of news, one of my oldest friends from childhood, Audrey, lost her husband, the great jazz guitarist Jeff Golub, on New Year's morning. He had been suffering from a rare and incurable neurodegenerative disease, and he and Audrey had chosen to forego life-prolonging treatment, so his passing was peaceful. But damn, I'm so sad for Audrey, for their two young sons, for all of us to have lost this dear, warm and talented man so soon. Audrey is one of the strongest women I know, and I hate being so far away from her at this time. It's weird to go about the day -- like everything's all normal -- holding this inside. I swallow the lump in my throat, think bewildered thoughts, send love to Audrey. I don't know about anything sometimes. Life.

  1. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. I know how strange it is to know the world is different from it was before yet people go on living as if nothing has changed. your sophie, her hair in the sunlight is spun gold. She is so beautiful and as mysterious as life itself.

  3. As Glen said the other night when we were watching a video of Keith Richards playing a guitar solo: "He makes his guitar speak for him."
Jeff Golub did surely let his guitar speak for him. Sometimes words just don't do it.
"We're not in this alone. That's why we listen to the blues."
And Sophie. She is stardust. She is golden.
May music comfort and soothe us all.
I, too, send love to Audrey, though we never met. She has suffered great loss.
May there be peace for her and the knowledge that she is not alone.
And for you, too, Elizabeth. For you too.

  16. I'm so sorry for your friend Audrey, and for you, too. It can be surreal when someone dies, even someone whose passing is not a surprise.

  17. I hope that as the days pass, you are able to let your sorrow show in ways that work for you. I am certain your friend feels your support and I hope that you, in turn, feel the support and love of your friends. I am so often reminded how surreal the coexistence of time and grief is; how we can feel so utterly consumed by emotion and yet still bound to march through the days and weeks doing the things that we always do. Love and light to you and yours.
