What She Was Wearing
this is my suicide dress
she told him
I only wear it on days
when I'm afraid
I might kill myself
if I don't wear it
you've been wearing it
every day since we met he said
and these are my arson gloves
so you don't set fire to something?
he asked
exactly
and this is my terrorism lipstick
my assault and battery eyeliner
my armed robbery boots
I'd like to undress you he said
but would that make me an accomplice?
and today she said I'm wearing
my infidelity underwear
so don't get any ideas
and she put on her nervous breakdown hat
and walked out the door

Every time you post this I just want to kiss your face. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI love it every time
ReplyDeleteI adore this - you could post it every day and I wouldn't tire of it.
ReplyDeleteIt is my second favourite of all the poems you've posted, absolute favourite being Terence Winch's Success Story (fingers crossed that the link worked!)
I too love this every time you post it. And the picture...
ReplyDeleteLove it.
ReplyDeleteIn response to an earlier post.
ReplyDeleteI devoted myself to the care of our Evie for 20+ years. Expecting Evie to end first I neglected my marriage. Then he left us, he died and my perspective changed. I used to feel like a single mom, now I really am a single parent. My heart goes out to you.
I have that outfit too!!
ReplyDeleteYes, this and poetry, period. If there were not one other thing to encourage gratitude, there would be poetry and it would be enough. xo
ReplyDeleteI love that poem!
ReplyDeleteit's the best poem. if only the woman in the photo were flipping the bird. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteWait...are there nipples up there?
