Report from the Dentist: Is it Safe?*

So, I'm going to moderate my tiny little mother mind™ words of this morning -- or at least temper them -- by saying that the anesthesiologist with the famous physicist's name turned out to be a wonderful guy. Really wonderful. He was gentle and kind and told me I was a saint. I told him that I most assuredly was not a saint and that he didn't know me from Adam. It turns out that he has a sense of humor, too, because he looked at me and said, You're right. You're probably dark and evil on the inside. Those were probably the truest words ever said, but only ya'll know that. It turned out, too, that Sophie had no cavities but needed her impacted lower wisdom teeth removed, and when I say removed, I mean right then and there. I felt boxed in when the dentist came out to tell me. She's a surgeon, and she specializes in treating people with special needs so there was room in the box, but still. I basically hyperventilated in the waiting room over the next four hours, in between texting with a few good friends and reading about Melania Trump in The New Yorker. That made me stop hyperventilating and start praying to Jesus for our salvation. The anesthesiologist with the famous physicist's name walked me to my car when it was all over. He lifted Sophie out of the wheelchair and put her in the front seat of my car, fastened her seatbelt and then helped me to fold up the wheelchair and lift it into the back of the car. So except for the hourly wage, I have to eat my words.

Also, it's my youngest child's birthday today, and he's fifteen years old. I'll devote a whole post to Oliver tomorrow, if I make it through the night. We're having Vietnamese food for dinner and a peanut butter chocolate birthday cake for dessert.

All will be well. All will be well. All manner of thing shall be well.

  1. Rock on! I hope Sophie feels pleasantly numb and her recovery is swift and uneventful. I am so pleased that he turned out to be so wonderful.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Oliver! I can't believe he's 15. Is he clamoring to take Driver's Ed? (Sorry. I know. You were trying to make it through the night. Maybe a stiff drink?)

    XOXO

  2. Julian of Norwich?
Bless you for your patience, your wisdom, your steadfast advocacy for your daughter AND your sons. Bless the anesthesiologist for his kindness. And sense of humor. Remind me to tell you about an anesthesiologist I met who was a bit of an angel.
May Sophie be relieved of all pain and let Oliver have the VERY BEST BIRTHDAY because he already has the very best mama. All love...M

  6. I never say this. You know me. But God bless the anesthesiologist. And you. And Sophie. And Oliver. And Henry. Amen.

  7. So was the anesthesiologist cute? Doctors don't walk patients to the care and certainly don't lift anyone. Was he hitting on you?

Glad she got the impacted teeth out. Poor baby.

  8. What a day! I know you a little and I'd call you a saint. I hope Sophie is okay from here on out. I'm glad she made it thru the ordeal okay. And I'm glad you made it thru so far too. Happy Birthday to sweet Oliver! It's hard to believe he is 15! I'll be thinking of you all tonight.

  9. Don't know the reference -- dang! But what a surprise about the anesthesiologist. Wow. Knock me over with a feather. And here, I'm going to give you your response line to "You're a Saint": Why, thank you, I AM a goddamn saint! If they don't laugh, they are halfway in the grave.

Happy for all of you at the end of the day. Happy Birthday to your budding 15 yo. Wow.

  11. Whew! I'm glad that is over for Sophie and you. A kind and helpful anesthesiologist (well paid) was a nice bonus.
    Happy birthday to Oliver. Celebrate!

    Best,
    Bonnie

  14. "You're right. You're probably dark and evil on the inside." Literally laughed out loud up here. Thanks for that! Hope Sophie's recovery is smooth and easy and the birthday celebrations were fun :o)

  15. No idea about the line, but it's a good one. Very similar to what we use around here everyday.
Sophie looks OK and fairly pain free - I hope she is!
Beautiful toenails once again, your discipline in adorning yourself is admirable.
15?!! I can remember when he seemed about 3 1/2' tall with a cherubic face. He has become such an interesting and handsome young man.

  16. Isn't that one of life's great joys: discovering that a presumed ogre is actually a modest, friendly, funny and compassionate person. I'm so glad it happened to you and all went well at the dentist.

Happy Birthday to Oliver and looking forward to tomorrow's post devoted to him.

  19. I love Marahon Man! Have you read Goldmans books on the movies? Somewhat dated but still truly great. "No one knows anything" is still true today.
