I've run away and found my dream house

Who knew that it would be in Spokane, Washington?

My new home is named Gilda, which happens to be my beautiful, now-deceased aunt's name. She gave me a copy of The Hobbit when I was seven years old and made my first holy communion, which I promptly read and -- well -- you know the rest of my history of reading. I tell you this because I have always loved the idea of hobbit residences, small cosy cottages, and this is exactly my dream house.

In all honesty, I am up in Spokane helping to move Henry into his new dorm room. I didn't think he wanted me to come up with him this year, but when I asked him what day he needed a plane ticket and he said, Aren't you coming with me? and I said, Oh, do you want me to come with you? and he said, Yes! I want you to help me and also meet my roommate! and I said, Well, I guess. Ha ha ha ha ha. Do you want to?

So here we are. Unlike Dream House Gilda, Henry's new dorm room is named The Ugliest Dorm Room in the Disunited States of America.

Notice the blue PLASTIC curtains. I won't share the picture of the communal bathroom out in the hallway. I snuck inside to use it and was barely able to sit down on the toilet without my knees hitting the door. I was literally about one inch from reading the Potty Talk Newspaper that was taped on the door, educating me about social justice issues. Today we will be shaping up the ship, visiting Target. I'll post an "after" shot, but in the meantime, know that the two guys living there will lend it a degree of beauty that it might never have seen.

Fun fact: Henry's roommate has several siblings with special needs and is, according to Henry, the nicest person he's ever met.

That's either completely wild and random or, there are no accidents, as my friend Carrie says.

  1. There are no accidents! And it's mysterious, isn't it?

  3. There are no accidents.

The trailer looks lovely. While I was away I ran into a young man who could have been Henry's brother they looked so much alike.

  4. First of all- he WANTED you to go with him! Isn't that beautiful?
And speaking of beautiful- uh- those two boys. Yep. Well, men. Whatever.
And yes, I think that you could live quite happily in Gilda and your sleep would always be sweet.

  5. Oh my heart. Your boy! His roommate too. That looks eerily like my horrific freshman dorm room at U of DEL in 1978. Some things never change. Wishing him the best year. We just moved our baby girl into her senior apartment where she is living by herself in her new school, new town. Bittersweet. I wish you and me both a hobbit house. That book changed my life, wish I could remember the year! I could live in that airstream for a very long time. xo

  7. You're not wrong about the beauty of the inhabitants casting a glow on those plastic curtains. Heavens, such young men!

I dream of an Airstream. My spiritual caravan-animal, I think, ever since I read Tom Robbins.

  8. Great trailer -- I would be happy as a clam there, too. How sweet that Henry wanted you to come. Sounds as if the guys are going to make great roomies. Strange, happy damn luck. Here's to a great school year for your young man!

  9. Wow to all of this. Good wow. Bad wow. I bought a condo partly because my daughter's sophomore dorm room was so awful. There were other awful things in our lives at the time too. Buying Gilda would be a lot wiser than buying a 3rd-floor walk up condo in a million year old building. Just sayin'.

  10. Ever since I saw The Long, Long Trailer I wanted one. The trailers of today are so sterile.

I hope this is the beginning of a lifelong friendship between those two boys.

  11. I love that Henry wanted you to come with him back to school. That dorm room looks so typical of dorm rooms except that one has a bit of space to work with. Looking forward to the after picture. And the airstream, is that where you stayed? Henry is so gorgeous. Are you sure he has no interest in movies?

  12. Rita Hayworth has nothing on you or your beautiful Airstream. I wish I was with you. BTW...I am also a hobbit lover - but that's not surprising given your no coincidence theory. I have a Tolkien quote I keep along side my computer "if more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold it would be a merrier world." I would like to think that Tolkien living today, would, in keeping his words modern-day relevant, add "and electronics" after hoarded gold. I am so happy for Henry. And for you. My heart sings. It is a wonderful feeling to see him enter adulthood, and begin to reconnect with Mom on this level. Oh the places he will go....
You have raised a morally grounded, proactive, compassionate human being. You have made the world a better place.

  14. I LOVE Gilda! I always wanted to live in a motor home and be like a turtle, carrying my house everywhere I went. Blue plastic curtains definitely leave something to be desired, though. Henry looks like he'll be quite at home despite them!

Don't tell Henry a 68 yo lesbian has a crush on him, k?

  16. The dorm room is hideous. Its occupants are beautiful. I hope they both have a fanulous year. There are no accidents. Those two amazing young men are not there by chance.

  17. Those pimped out Pulls are fabulous, several of my Friends have one, on my bucket list is to own an Airstream and personalize it... when the Magnolia Pearl Airstream was for Sale I dreamed of buying it, alas someone else actually could buy it dashing my daydream. And yes, there are no accidents... such an exciting time for those Young Men!

  18. (after managing to delete comment) After reading your other recent posts, this is the one that made me cry. Those two beautiful young men, eclipsing all that is less beautiful about the 'before' dorm room. No accidents, that's when I began to cry. I wish you a hobbit home of your own and so love you and your family.
