Really? Really?

Just for fun, I think I'm going to inaugurate a "Smells Like Bullshit" post every couple of weeks or so.

From the mouth of Virginia Representative Bob Marshall, at a rally opposing Planned Parenthood funding:
"The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children," said Marshall, a Republican who then added: "In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There's a special punishment Christians would suggest."

I wonder what the Big SP has to say about this? Or those of us who have never had to make the decision to have or not have an abortion. And why, why are these sorts of people working in government, not to mention speaking in "God's" name?

  1. Ugh. That's like Miss Beverly Hills who said that God wants gays dead, because the bible is "pretty black and white on it". I said maybe her father should sell her into slavery, since the bible give tips on how to do that honorably. Ugh.

I LOVE the photo - it makes me laugh out loud, and I need that! Thank you so much.

  3. And pray tell who is responsible for children born with similar health conditions from mothers who didn't have any abortions? We are to assume that if he believes there is only one God then...what?

  4. I have to add that while reading your post I kept thinking that it reminded me of something Woody Allen said and that would fit those people to a T:
"My education was dismal. I went to a series of schools for mentally disturbed teachers."

  5. I saw on this on BlogHer --Shannon Des Roches Rosa's Special Needs column. He has apparently apologized but the apology is also appalling.

  6. God help us all. I've asked before and I'll ask again--can't you please, please run for political office?

  7. I just read on Louise's blog that disabled people are "invisible" in Haiti because disability is regarded as a curse or a manifestation of evil. Considering disability to be a punishment for our sins sounds pretty close to this Haitian notion.

  8. I am sorry to see that the good Representative Bob Marshall's mother must have aborted his older sibling.

  9. I think it is a good idea, this regular feature.

I think it is also imperative that we are aware people like this exist. And speak. And are listened to . Respectfully . And have power. It makes me shake my head in disbelief, in sadness.

  11. There is a Republican legislator in Florida who is trying, as we speak, to end the "slaughter" of our unborn and take abortion to the Supreme Court again.
I am so sick of this. So sick of the religious right trying to mandate what we do with our love, with our bodies while raging against the government's influence in our health care system.
There is something wrong with these people and I don't know what it is.

  12. I believe I might have indicated to you, at some point, that I am originally from Virginia. Er, um would you believe I was just kidding? And, um, I lived in Texas for a period of time. I won't ever go into what their "board of education" has planned for the nation's text books. Perhaps I should just become "from unknown origin"! I agree with Single Dad!!!!!
