Dreaming with Sophie

Periodically, my friends will tell me that they've had a dream, and in the dream Sophie is walking and talking and smiling and laughing. My heart leaps when I hear about these dreams. I imagine that my beautiful daughter's spirit is so strong and so filled with grace that she resides, sometimes, in my dearest friends' subconscious. It's incredibly comforting in a way that I can't articulate.

Just the other day, one of my oldest friends from college emailed me about a recent dream she had had with Sophie, and while I haven't seen Missy in many years, I feel intensely connected to her beautiful spirit and will forever be grateful for what she took the time to tell me:

I woke up dreaming "with" Sophie as they say in Spanish.  I was visiting you in your palatial home overlooking the ocean.  My boys were playing with your boys while you and I were spending time with Sophie in the living room.  She was lying on her back and I was bent over her gazing into her beautiful brown eyes.  I asked you what I should do if she started having a seizure.  Then, we went to the park and she was walking slowly in front of me...she turned around and asked, "can I catch up with the other kids?" who had run ahead.  I said, "of course," and she ran ahead.  My overwhelming sense in the dream was that you were taking such perfect care of her and that she was well-loved.

  1. What a beautiful dream -- I've had experiences like that too, friends dreaming "with" my daughter (love that way of putting it).

  2. A dream like this is such a positive dream at multiple levels, for not only does it say something of your friend's solid relationship with you sand Sophie, that Sophie should be the person that appears in her dreams for whom great things happen, namely that she can run and catch up with the others, but it also says a great deal about your friend's positive state of mind. Her Sophie part is doing well in the palatial house overlooking the sea with you and Sophie getting better.

  3. This is lovely Elizabeth! Thank you for sharing it and for sharing your interpretation of it.

I have heard of similar stories after a child with a disability has died -- that they have returned to friends or family in dreams or visions and that they are whole.

And what a powerful message Sophie communicated through Missy -- "You were taking such perfect care of her and she was well loved."

Isn't it amazing how our spirits are interconnected.

  6. Blessings. What blessings to know that friends are so intensely caring about you and your family that they dream about them and you.
Do you see your influence, Elizabeth? Do you?

  7. I don't know why this reminded me of a situation with my teen who is very disabled. She seems to have a connection, however, that we do not have. Once in a store she stopped and began screaming that the roof was "not safe, not finished...danger, danger." I was mortified. Until the next day when a friend called me to tell me it was all over the news...the roof which had never been properly inspected had collapsed. Fortunately, everyone got out alive but I wonder how many of those cashiers remember the little kid yelling the day before with the embarrassed mom? A friend of mine just shook her head at me as I was telling her about the incident and reminded me, "There is NOTHING wrong with her spirit man." I see this beautiful photo of Sophie on this post and this is all that comes to mind. There is nothing wrong with her spirit man. She is perfect.

  10. I LOVE this. Many people have told me about dreams they have had since Samantha died....she is running, laughing and in some, she is a little naughty. Good for her! I would expect nothing less.

I love that your friend got a feeling of you taking such good care of her because you are. I can imagine you friend thinking of you and your daughter through the day and feeling a sense of peace.

Keep doing what you do :)

  12. It's true that in Spanish we dream "con" someone. And it's marvellous that your friend's subconscious can register such precious moments. Many thanks for such a beautiful photo and post.

    Greetings from London.

  15. Such a beautiful story of a friend. Love transcends all. Sky has dreamt of one of our disabled friends, a man. In the dream he is walking, dancing.
The song she wrote called "Fly" is about this hope, this dream of seeing a different friend in this light.
