If you could only stop your heartbeat,

for one heartbeat. That's the final line of songwriter and singer Bill Callahan's Too Many Birds and one that set me to weeping in my car yesterday as I drove back home from a cake delivery. I don't know why it made me cry and I don't know how to say it but that I was who I was, who I had been, that slither of feeling when music takes you to within.

Too many birds -- one last bird -- turns around and hopes to find the place it last knew rest

  1. What was. What was interrupted. I wish for you a deep and glittering meditation by the ocean. Soon.

  2. Okay. That was about the sweetest five plus minutes I ever spent.
I know why it made you cry.
How I wish I could tuck you into the Panther Room. There is room for you there. You could rest.

  3. He reminds me - in a way - of Jackson Browne, and yet, not so much. I think it's the simplicity and directness of his music, the lack of artifice, and the poem at the heart of it. I love singer-songwriter-poets, and there just aren't too many GOOD ones around. James Taylor and Jackson Browne are my faves...Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins and Eva Cassidy...am I dating myself?
So glad that his music was able to take you to that place of feeling within yourself.

  4. I can see why this song would do this to you. I know exactly what you're trying to articulate. There are some songs that just stop me in my tracks.
