Dominion

I've been staring at this photo of Charles Darwin, thinking it one of the most incredible photos I've ever seen. Staring at it, I remember a thought I had a few weeks ago when I walked around the glorious woods and fields of Yosemite National Park, here in California. I was reminded of the Biblical verses below:

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Genesis 1:26

I'm not so sure about that and at risk of sounding heretical, I'd venture to say that statement is a colossal joke.

  2. Not quite sure we should have been given dominion over anything....

  3. Yes, it is a joke.

This statement, for me, outlines where we've gone wrong as a culture. No dominion-over, but rather participation-in. We are one being.

  4. Um, to whom was God speaking? "Let us make man in our image..." Who is the us? And the our? Never thought of that before.

I'm beginning to wonder about the veracity of the bible:)

  5. I always wonder about translation. What were the other possible choices of meaning and nuance?

  6. Dominion. Hmmm, sounds like "responsibility" to me. Nah, I'd rather sit and eat ice cream and watch the flowers grow. Someone (or something) else can have dominion. ;-)

  7. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it refers to responsibility, and we've SO blown it.

  8. I'm not sure, but I've always thought of that as meaning "take care of." And if that's true, it says more about our response to God's plan than about God's plan. Just put a big fat L on our foreheads .......
