So, it's Monday morning, my favorite day of the week, and I've eaten the above digestive biscuits that I made yesterday -- not all of them -- for breakfast with my coffee. It's raining -- raining! raining in May in Los Angeles! -- the boys and Sophie are off to school, and it's a perfect day for an Emily Dickinson poem. This one is a tad obtuse, but if you read it aloud a couple of times, I think it'll make sense.

The Brain

The brain is wider than the sky,
For, put them side by side,
The one the other will include
With ease, and you beside.

The brain is deeper than the sea,
For, hold them, blue to blue,
The one the other will absorb,
As sponges, buckets do.

The brain is just the weight of God,
For, lift them, pound for pound,
And they will differ, if they do,
As syllable from sound.

Emily Dickinson

Reader, what is your Monday like?

  1. Those digestive biscuits are gorgeous, woman! Good job!
I am having a beautiful Monday. It is cool and clear and my house is sparkling in the sun and I've had a walk and dug up some passion flower vines along the path which I am about to plant.
And I got the new Vanity Fair and there is a very, very fine picture of Mr. Brad Pitt on the cover.
    So yes- a wonderful day!

  2. And I have lived on Hallelujah cake the last several mornings. Finally gone. Thank goodness.

    Happy Monday my friend.

  3. Well. The journal was perfect, even lovelier-looking than those biscuits. To understand ED I usually re-write her poems in plain language and see what comes out. Good luck on the job.

  5. Lovely. Although, I'll thank you to return my rain clouds when you're done with them. Seattle was one of the hottest cities in the US today and I didn't like it one bit. My allergies were fierce and my house is under attack by droves of workmen sweating profusely and swearing and listening to hip hop on the radio. Perhaps I ought to chase the rain down to LA for a few days...
