Johnny Mathis' voice is one of the first one hears piping out of department store speakers and Target elevators when the season rolls around, but when I hear it I inevitably think back to my childhood and the rich and joyful Christmases that my parents gave my sisters and me. I remember my long red and white checked dress and white turtleneck that I wore one year, Pecan Puffs on a plate in the dining room, the white electric candles in every window of the house.

Johnny Mathis has done other amazing religious singing. He was inspired in his youth by attending houses of worship of different religions. Check out this interview about this incredible recording of his.

ReplyDeleteSingle Dad: Wow. I had no idea that Mathis sang so many religious tunes. That Aramaic one is phenomenal. Thank you for posting the link.
ReplyDeleteI wish you many clear midnights, Elizabeth, where the air smells cold and the sky is so dark it looks light, and the world is so quiet you think for a second you might be all alone in the world yet your heart is so full you're not lonely at all.
ReplyDeleteAhhh... That was magical. Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.

ReplyDeleteOh my.
Look- you know me. But I might just come here one day soon and let myself listen to every one of these songs and see if they make me cry.
It's a possibility.
Love it! A wonderful taste of holiday nostalgia. Johnny Mathis' Christmas songs are pure comfort food!
