More Moons

It's my birthday today and I just read this poem and loved it. I'm not sure if it's "legal" to put it into the blog without permission, but if Galway is reading this, I hope you don't mind.

HIDE AND SEEK 1933
by Galway Kinnell

Once when we were playing
hide-and-seek and it was time
to go home, the rest gave up
on the game before it was done
and forgot I was still hiding.
I remained hidden as a matter
of honor until the moon rose.

  1. I need to de-lurk to tell you Happy Birthday! I'm friends with Laura and found you through her blog. Your writing is beautiful, thought-provoking and incredibly moving. I'm awed and inspired by all that you do!

  2. Happy (belated) Birthday Elizabeth!
Great poem. There's no way Galway would mind.

(Have you ever read "Blue Peninsula" by Madge McKeithen?)

  3. Kathy, I did read that book and was so excited by it initially. The premise is perfection -- a poem as an intro to musings about life with a son who is deteriorating. But I found her writing almost ponderous -- sometimes great, and her taste in poetry was right on (at least for me), but on the whole it was difficult to get through.

  5. Silly me! I knew that was you in the bikini!
I read Blue Peninsula a long while ago, and don't remember much more than loving the image of her holding onto to torn pages of poems, finding the poetry as a means of survival and literally finding strength in the words to get through.
