I've made no bones about my dwindling faith in the Catholic Church (note that it's not a dwindling faith but a dwindling faith in the Catholic Church). I'd say it's taking years of mulling over conflicting emotions and deep bred to the bone traditions, and I'm not finished, yet. When I watch things like this, though, I shudder in recognition and perhaps even a bit of the nausea that the existentialists wrote about so many years ago.
The Intelligence² Debate - Stephen Fry (Unedited) by Xrunner17
I agree with you, Elizabeth. This talk is powerful and convincing. So much so I shared it on Face book. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteFascinating! I'm curious to hear what Ann Widdecombe had to say -- maybe I'll dig up her video next. (It'll probably make me mad.)
ReplyDeleteA very succinct and knowledgeable presentation on "glitter city" and its many gods...noticed my friend, "Hitch" at the same table? You may also enjoy "Not In His Image" by John Lamb Lash, if you haven't read it yet?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing that. You've once again opened my eyes to something I hadn't discovered before - Dailymotion.com.
ReplyDeleteI've been "madly in love" with that blessed Stephen Fry for decades and now this eloquent personal revelation fuels the flames even more.
I think these things all the time as the catholic church victimized my family for many years but sadly they never find their way from my brain to my mouth or fingertips. Thank god people like Stephen have found the pathways.
I have the utmost respect and admiration for dissident Catholics.
ReplyDeleteI loved these articles:
We Are All Nuns article
We Are All Nuns original essay
Everyone (but the pope, apparently) knows you don't mess with nuns!
What a wonderful speech.
ReplyDeleteI was in a HUGE Catholic cathedral yesterday in Mobile and it was overwhelming- the soaring ceilings up to heaven with gold leaf and the stained glass and oh, my, it was overwhelming and a man was addressing a group of people and discussing the way the host literally became the body of Christ in the believer and I snorted and realized I had to get out of there. Right then.
