I don't have very much to say these days -- am feeling more contemplative than otherwise. I told a friend today that the only thing I'm interested in these days as far as current events go - or drawn to or in awe of -- are the words of two dying men: Jimmy Carter and Oliver Sacks. One has a deep faith in a Christian God and the other is an atheist, yet both are imbued with a holiness that stuns me. If you haven't read either of their words about life and about dying, I recommend them. I could add no more.
Yes. M'am. Absolutely two holy men. As they have lived, so are they dying. We will all die. To be able to accept that fact when the reality of it comes so close, to be able to joke and muse and reflect- that is what I would wish for. I doubt I will live up to anywhere near the examples of these men.
ReplyDeleteI share your awe.
ReplyDeleteIf more Christians were like Jimmy Carter I might actually consider going to church.
ReplyDeleteYes and yes. Oliver and Jimmy. Paying close attention to both over here.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad to think that all too soon the world will lose these two amazing men who live with grace and work for peace and understanding. I can only hope that others soon step up to take their place.
ReplyDeleteYour recent portraits of Sophie have been just stunning in their beauty and dimension. Sophie holds the space in the photo, her eyes looking deep into you. She's so ethereal and lovely, but really these are portraits of your relationship, and you are so present in these photographs too. Love, RA
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely
DeleteLove those two men. Good men.
ReplyDeleteTwo 'holy' men from such different perspectives have much in common with Sophie, looking lovely as ever.
ReplyDeleteIt is better to focus on these guys then on all the rest of it.
ReplyDeleteSophie is sacred.
I love Oliver Sacks and his words of late, I am so glad he is sharing his thoughts-I feel such an ache when I imagine his words never spoken!
ReplyDeleteSophie is so beautiful.... on an 'undeep' note, I LOVE her walls, I've been thinking how to do this for Scott...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shelly! Her walls are a simple upholstery -- a board with 2" foam and then fabric. I had an upholsterer come in and do it -- the window sills and baseboards are also covered. I wish I'd done it sooner!
DeleteI've always loved Oliver Sack's writing. His recent NYTimes pieces - particularly the latest one - are so moving and fascinating; that rare blend of science and art. What a gift to mankind he's been.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful picture.
