Aside from Monday, when the kids go back to school after a usually frenzied weekend of sports and church and wild careening around the house, Saturday is my favorite day of the week. And lest you think I'm one of those mothers who relishes the constant company of her children, the reason I love Saturdays is because I have a babysitter who comes at 9 am and leaves at 5 pm. She is a wonderful woman whose job is to mainly watch my daughter Sophie who, while fourteen years old, is severely disabled with seizures and developmental disabilities. Having a babysitter all day enables me to not only take the boys to their various sports activities but to go to the grocery store, run errands and even get away by myself for a bit.So, when M called me this afternoon and haltingly started to say, Um, Elizabeth, I was wondering if..., my heart sank because I knew what was coming. I have tickets tomorrow to see a show in and it's the first time I can go and I've always wanted to go and everyone in my family is going and I just wondered if you would mind if I went and didn't come to work, she said all in one breath. What kind of show? I wondered aloud, even though I knew that of course, I'd say it was all right that I would be fine and to have a good time.
I am so with you on this one. I have watched my two elderly twin aunts move from an infatuation with tv hucksters to now not only believing every single word they say but giving away their MONEY and thereby leaving themselves with much less to support themselves into their last days. Criminal. It seems that the hucksters prey on those with the least to give. The Bible as interpretted by the TV thumper dictates my aunts' lives. As well, it is impossible to sway them from their commitment to this. They send checks regularly and whenever "called" upon to do so. ARGH. In my world, taking advantage of the weak, sick and poor is not a Christian act of kindness. Okay, I have probably offended someone mightily.

Ugh. I have no personal experience with televangelists, but they make me queasy and angry anyway. I hope you survived your Saturday...I know that feeling of the ONE thing you need and look forward to being pulled from beneath you.

ReplyDeleteIt's sick, wrong, and they are CRIMINALS! But because they are a church, they can get away with this thievery and they don't even have to pay taxes.
I know, Elizabeth, I know, exactly how you feel. Similar situation has happened to me a number of times.
ReplyDeleteHowever, whatever a person feels is so special to him/her, is really a personal preference. Hopefully, your sitter does not have many special events during your scheduled time. That is more important than if what is considered so special is something that you consider a colossal waste of time. I had to let go a sitter who had so many friends and family commitments and "special" events that would crop up during her scheduled time with my kids, that it was causing me a lot of stress rescheduling my own plans.
I'm sorry that this irony of how your sitter wants to spend that time exists.
There was a similar "faith-healing" kind of attempt, to try and help my siblings with their deafness, back in the day. What a terrible message to send to people: that if only you have faith (and give enough money), you'll be well. As if God is just waiting for you to believe (and pay up) before he heals you. Don't get me started.
