  4. Ironic you should post that quote. The priest used it in his homily on Sunday. I didn't realize it was Haitian.

I received this note from a friend of ours in Chicago regarding Haiti:

IT IS THE FIRST INDEPENDENT NATION IN LATIN AMERICA, THE FIRST POST-COLONIAL INDEPENDENT BLACK-LED NATION, AND THE ONLY NATION WHOSE INDEPENDENCE WAS GAINED AS A RESULT OF A SUCCESSFUL SLAVE REBELLION. AND FOR THOSE OF US IN CHICAGO, JEAN-BAPTISTE DUSABLE A RUNAWAY HAITIAN SLAVE, MY ANCESTOR AND THE
    FIRST SETTLER OF CHICAGO.

  6. This proverb gives me hope, yet my heart and eyes leak for the mothers, fathers, children and lovers who have lost. Because a soul is irreplaceable.

  7. What a lovely picture. And a picture and proverb of hope during this difficult time for them.

  8. Have you read "Mountains beyond Mountains" -- about the Harvard doctor who has dedicated himself to building and working at a hospital in Haiti --

There are amazing Haitian proverbs like this one.

My two adopted kids are from Haiti.

  9. Louise - I have read the book and listened to the audio version as well -- I'm a big fan (who isn't?) of Paul Farmer. And I didn't know that about your adopted children. Bless them and their families, wherever they are, and you.

  10. This reminded me of the book called "Mountains Beyond Mountains" -- a memoir, I think, about a doctor named Paul Farmer who works relentlessly in Haiti. I am thinking about him and the people he serves today.
