Scratch the VW van, I want one of these
That's Roald Dahl's writing shed.
And here's Virginia Woolf's:
I actually visited Mark Twain's one weird summer when I escaped with my first love to upstate New York. That's a whole other post, I suppose -- or maybe even a book. Here's his "shed:"
And who wouldn't want one of these? That's George Bernard Shaw and his writing shed.
No wonder Dylan Thomas waxed so lyrical from this creative space:
You can get a glimpse into my real character if I told you that when I read about these writing cabins and then saw the photos -- well -- I practically peed in my pants.
You can see the rest here.

I have a writing room which is as lovely as anyone's. Do I use it? No. I sit on the back porch. I FINALLY GET THE ROOM AND THERE ARE NO CHILDREN HERE TO BOTHER ME. But you know what, Elizabeth? I think I really don't use it because I don't feel I deserve it. Because I am not really "writing."
ReplyDeleteThat's sort of sick and very sad.
I have a writing room, too, and I use it sometimes, but when the Spring finally comes, I prefer to sit on the back porch in the sunshine and listen to the birds chatter and have my pup at my feet.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that if I had one of those lovely writing spaces, I'd be more likely to hang out in there, drinking coffee and listening to music than writing. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like one...;-)
After college, our oldest son moved all his pottery stuff into our enclosed back porch. He hasn't touched it since. So, I recently announced I was reclaiming it for my studio. As soon as spring springs, I'm cleaning it out and keeping it. I'll still take the VW van.
ReplyDeleteThose a fabulous spaces...maybe every mom needs one, just to have some space in which to gather her thoughts together. Instead of "Go to your room!" it could be, "I'm going to my cottage now!"
ReplyDeleteI would pick the shed over the minivan, in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteI've always suspected that I should have spent my college years doing carpentry apprenticeship (and I'm not going to share this with my kids! :))
ReplyDeletePerfection. I love small spaces. Which is why I may never leave this carriage house I call a home.
ReplyDeleteI would park an old (real) 21 window van in the back yard and write there. I'd have BOTH that way :)
ReplyDeleteOh wait, I don't write ...... Well I guess I could doodle
I'd love a shed, a real writing shed all of my own, with dusky blue walls and a window looking over the Suffolk countryside, a woodburning stove, a fat cat and a battered wooden desk........
ReplyDeleteI keep threatening to turn my detached, 1-car garage into a writing "shed," now you've really inspired me!
ReplyDeleteI wish my shed looked like one of those! Some previous owner had used my shed as a chicken coop, among other things. I'll have to send you a picture of it for a good laugh! xo
ReplyDeleteI've got one for rent!
ReplyDeletewv: dabil. You can write there or just gaze at the view and dabil.
take me,
ReplyDeletei'm yours.
Oh I totally want a writing shed! I have a writing kitchen table. Hmmmm...not so much.
ReplyDeleteMy mouth watered...I really crave a quiet space of my own. And I've even convinced myself I could keep it organized (ha!) so the clutter wouldn't distract me.
ReplyDeleteI love this and would really really like to have one. I will have a writing room when I get the gumption and have the emotional fortitude to transform my husband's studio. It's so very hard to consider.
ReplyDeleteOh man, these made me weak in the knees. Just imagine, a teeny little house all to yourself. Sigh...
ReplyDeleteso much better than a car...
ReplyDeleteJack London State Park, Valley of The Moon (Glen Ellen), Sonoma - his writing cottage with the sheets of paper draped on clothes line among phonographs and typewriters is poignant!
ReplyDeleteNice to read you. Une plaisir de vous lire....
I dream of a writing shed, one with two shed cats (Queen Teen is allergic, so no cats in the house any more) who will get in my way as I write, lots of plants, a big wooden desk with nothing on it but what I need to write, a comfy chair, and good light.
ReplyDeleteMaybe next year
