I think I need to crawl into a hole and not come back out until 2012. I made the mistake of venturing into CostPlus World Market and was overwhelmed by Christmas prematurity. The amount of cheap stuff for sale was astonishing.
I hate cheap stuff. Who buys all this cheap stuff? There were literally hordes of people evidently buying cheap stuff, speaking what seemed like a dozen languages.
I bought a microplane to grate nutmeg and a case of what my Italian relatives call agita.

It reminds me, I'm writing a post on Christmas. Like you, I try to crawl under my bed when the yuletide season arrives.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from London.
Well, you'll love the microplane. I love mine.
ReplyDeleteAs to Christmas- it's just so depressing, all that crap.
I keep meaning to buy a microplane for nutmeg.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why, but I am amazingly cheerful about Christmas. Listened to Christmas music on the way to work and spent the entire day organizing Winter Holiday books (mostly Christmas) to display at the library. Cutest little deaf girl at the school gasped with pleasure at the sight of the Angelina Ballerina Christmas book. And you are going to think poorly of me, but this morning even the holiday displays at Starbucks pleased me.
Maybe I'm coming down with the flu.
It wouldn't be the holidays if I didn't go to Cost Plus. There is always stocking stuffer's items here.
ReplyDeleteI would rather go there than the mall.
Oh man, I agree. The most agita enducing place for me is the 99 cent store. Just row after row of cheap crap. I mean, where does all this come from? Does anybody really want it? Though I have to say, that the little ma and pa 99 cent store on the corner near me is fabulous, so what can I say?
ReplyDeleteI am always astonished by the amount of stuff in the world. It's really kind of scary!
ReplyDeleteI always think of this time of year as the festering season.
ReplyDeleteNutmeg is wonderful in so many dishes.
I get completely overwhelmed in those places.
ReplyDeleteCost Plus is my favorite store...though at Christmastime it gives me hives!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. The cheap crap gives me hives (and reminds me that when we buy it we are supporting Chinese cheap labor instead of local artisans).
ReplyDeleteThat said, Cost Plus is excellent for kitchen tools and inexpensive wine.
My first response to that photograph is to notice how pretty the colors are. Must be the little girl in me. Then I think that if all of those items actually find a home, they will end up in landfills eventually. Even if they're not sold, they're headed to landfills. And then it doesn't look so pretty any more. So I'm joining you in the hole until the madness stops.
ReplyDeleteMass produced shit. All this crap used to be home made and sold at craft fairs and it supported the local economy. It didn't used to be crap but something special. In my effort to purge all my crap I got rid of 3 boxes of Christmas decorations last year.
ReplyDeleteOMG I made the mistake of going to a local mall today and, let's just say, I had my judgment pants on. Cheap crap everywhere, people being nasty to each other, bling and lights and noise and friggin Santa! Tis the season...
ReplyDeleteGood luck to us all getting through Giftmas.
