Tiny Matters

Dang. I have some beautiful children.

The older I get, the more I'm conscious of ways very small things can make a change in the world. Tiny little things, but the world is made up of tiny matters, isn't it?
Sandra Cisneros

Sophie and her aide M got off the bus this afternoon, stepped down into the green grass and out into the sparkly air. It is sparkly, this sunny day in Los Angeles. M reported that Sophie had had a great day. She said they'd visited the school library, just down the hallway from The Ugly Room. She said that they had sat down and that she had read aloud from a collection of Sandra Cisneros' short stories. Sophie listened intently, M said, and focused on the book. She seems to really like print, M said, and I nodded. I've noticed that, too, a tiny matter that makes up the world.

This day sparkles.

  4. Your children ARE beautiful, in every way. And they all look so much alike -- genes run strong in this family.

I, too, am thankful for the little things. Very often they turn out to be the BIG things.

  6. Your children are just gorgeous and the way your boys look out for and protect their sister never fails to move me. I am so thrilled to hear about Sophie's very good day, the beauty that can happen in plain places. Beautiful post.

  8. Hell, yeah! Give that girl some Sandra Cisneros. And I wonder what else she'll love...sci fi? Romance novels? Madeleine L'Engle?

  10. This is wonderful. S is her mother's daughter:) Miss M is a wonderful teacher. The written word will open up worlds for S, as well as audio books for independent learning at home. always fascinating to me to see in my own child as the epileptic activity calms, capacity for learning and enjoyment of books emerges.

  13. So happy for the sparkle in your day. I never got around to commenting on your previous post about the UGLY room, it was so sad and all I could think was that I wished for some sunlight in there for Sophie. Well, books are the next best thing, and of course she loves books and being read to, how could your daughter not?
    And yes, beautiful children. :)

  16. You and Sophie are so fortunate for an aide as insightful as M. I can't, in my wildest dreams imagine one of my daughter's many, rotating aides ever doing anything remotely as sensitive and worthwhile with C.

And today I intend to begin reading good literature to her - you are such an inspiration.
