I went to an Episcopal prep school and every Christmas the choir did Lessons and Carols. The first carol always began with one soprano in the back of the darkened church singing this. It still sends chills up my spine.
It sends chills down my spine too. I've started to wonder if this kind of choir music is mainly an Anglican and Episcopal thing. I used to assume other denominations did the same, but I'm beginning to think maybe they didn't -- at least not with these very old, traditional English hymns. I wonder if even the very big Episcopal churches even have these kinds of choirs anymore. I know they've still got them in England, but I'm not so sure they do in America.
