I'm raising two boys who will always call southern California HOME. That's weird and wonderful to me given my east coast upbringing. I've written before about my surfing thing. You can read about it here.
I still haven't gone, but I'm getting inspired.
Look at this boy of mine, last weekend. His first time surfing and he's shining!
Very cool! I have always wanted to learn to surf!! And being from Southern California you'd think I would have. But now I have a son who loves to snowboard and skateboard. His first time on a snowboard at the age of 4 he took off and never looked back!!! Isn't it wonderful to see our kids shine like that!!! What fun!!!
ReplyDeleteCool shots. A friend of mine says that the child of two Southerners, or the child of a Southern mother--like the child of a Jewish woman--is always a Southerner. I don't know about that, but I don't think our children care....
ReplyDeleteI still don't believe my kids are California kids.
ReplyDeleteDid you take that 2nd shot of Hen? Amazing. Will show Jack in the morning...
WOW! What a great place to grow up! Those are fabulous photos...they could be blown up into posters.
ReplyDeleteSee him fly! What a joy that little boy is! You are not a stage mother, you are a very loving one, and it shows.
ReplyDeleteI can't connect to the link for the piece you wrote about surfing. I remember reading it, but I want to see it again. Didn't you sign up for a women's surf camp, but then something happened?
ReplyDeleteShanna -- click on the word "here" for the post. There's one a few posts after (around my birthday in August) when I went to a surfing lesson and the instructor didn't show up.
ReplyDeleteRobyn -- I'm actually not a true Southerner as my parents are both from NYC. I have a grandmother from Mississippi, but I've never really identified at all with my southern heritage!
ReplyDeleteLaura -- the photos were taken by someone at the birthday party and aren't mine!
Trojan Horse, eh? Excellent, excellent.
ReplyDeleteI so want to learn how to surf! We are farther north in CA so I mostly get the itch on vacation (now --just today! also in Hawaii, and in SD.). These are great pictures...and your kids are lucky to live where they do.
ReplyDeleteWow, I really love this! Look at that boy go! I can't imagine a bigger thrill--for either of you.
ReplyDeleteLove these pictures! Oh, how I wish Colorado had an ocean!
ReplyDeleteThat's just too cool! Your kids are growing up in a great place--they're not in danger of being homogenized.
ReplyDeleteone of the very best sports out there ..... what I love about it is the love of the ocean and the living things in it that surfing fosters in kids. He'll catch some amazing waves and see some amazing animals out there in the wild blue. A great life!
