DIY Stand Up Desk

Have ya'll heard that it's bad for you to sit down for any length of time even if you exercise regularly? Those who know me know that I sit down a lot -- writing, driving in my luxury vehicle through the streets of the metropolis, etc. -- and those who don't know me probably don't realize that while righteous, my fanny is a prime one for spreading. I really don't want to order one of those hipster stand-up desks, so I thought I'd kill the proverbial two birds and gather up a number of books that lie -- well -- everywhere in this house. Then I built myself a stand-up desk -- a place where my righteous fanny can stand free and taut in front of The Borrowers Aloft and back issues of Poetry, The Teenage Liberation Handbook, a couple of shoe boxes and the Kate Atkinson novel that I haven't gotten round to reading, yet.

What do you think?

The consensus from the Peanut Gallery and The Teenage Gallery was:  that's just dumb, Mom.

  1. One very good thing about getting older is that I find myself caring progressively less about the opinions of any galleries, be they dearly beloved or not. If it works for you, rock your righteous derrière proudly by that desk!!

  2. That looks so normal to me - totally how I do things around here.

Kate Atkinson, love her -- is there a new book out? Which one are you reading?

  3. Love the typewriter. Is the Kate Atkinson book Life After Life? I hope if/when you read it, you will tell us what you think. I keep hesitating for some reason, despite the reviews.

  4. Exactly what my daughter would say! I love it.

  5. Love the typewriter next to the printer, the high tech/old time feel of that space. When I see photos like this one, I want to poke through the drawers, examine the stuff on the shelves, sit (stand) at the desk. Brilliant solution!

  6. Well, if the teens pronounced it "dumb," you must be on to something. That is a word of admiration coming from a teen. If they had hated it, there would have been some other adjective. I've tried the standing workstation and my feet always get tired as do my calves and then I start getting paranoid fantasies about varicose veins, so I have to settle for getting up every few minutes to pour more coffee or tea. Is that good enough?

  7. Oh, you're definitely on to something! My doctor just told me that sitting is the new smoking. Now, every time my husband sits to watch TV he says, "I'm going to go in there and smoke."
