Christmas Carol of the Day

With apologies to all those who hate Christmas -- no bad feelings! -- I am happy to post the first of twenty-four carols of the day, a tradition I started four years ago on this blog. If you have any suggestions for carols that you love, please let me know. I am interested especially in weird or particularly gorgeous renditions of holiday songs.

One of my favorites is this -- turn it up LOUD -- and forgive the cheesiness of the video. When The Queen belts out O Tannebaum, I always get chills.

  1. It sends the odd chill up my spine, too, Elizabeth. What a voice.

  2. I'm not a fan of Christmas, but it has generated some of the greatest music in the history of western civilization....love your project to put the songs on line! It's something to look forward to...

  4. Me favorite carols are the sad ones in a minor key - like a dirge I guess. I'm just weird that way.

O come o come Emmanuel is my favorite

  5. I love Melissa Ethridge's It's Glorious. Did you post that last year? Maybe that is where I first heard it. And I love the sound of a children's choir singing Un Flambeau, Jeanette Isabella. And Bing Crosby singing Drummer Boy.

  6. My daughter is playing 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' at her piano recital Saturday night. (She didn't want that one, says she preferred something slow. It's what was left when she got to choose, and happens to be one of my faves.)

My all-time favorite serious Christmas song is O Holy Night. I love the line, "Till He appeared, and the soul felt it's worth".

Course I also love 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' and the Hanukkah song by Adam Sandler (it's not a Christmas song, but hey.)
