In His Element: Dispatch from the School of Revolution

We drove out to Malibu Canyon today and attended a very cool class on aboriginal hunting, trapping and stalking. It was beautiful country,  and while I had thought I'd drop Oliver off and do some work, I found myself, instead, walking and hiking through the brown and golden fields, past herds of deer in the quietest place you can imagine. I took lots of pictures, more of which I'll share later.

As you can imagine, The Big O is in his element. I'm warming up in the car -- hence, the weird formatting.

  1. Now THAT is education. Visceral and real.
I love Oliver's face, especially in the picture with the teacher man. I suppose he's the teacher man?
Anyway, yes. You have made such a good choice for your son and you will continue to do so.

  4. There is no question that you are doing the right thing. There was a time when I wished I had the courage to do that with one of mine...It only reinforces to me how much we all know what it right for our children. Congratulations and enjoy every peaceful and learning minute with him.

  6. I love this way of learning. This is the way I've heard they do it in Finland, I think (could be Denmark). They have a very short school day, and all the classes are taught outside, using the real world for lessons. Do you have to hunt down these activities on your own, or are there resources to help? So happy for O.
